Super Tuscan Wine Tasting

What exactly does the term Super Tuscan Wine refer to? Super Tuscan wines originated in Tuscany Italy in the early 70's .  The early Super Tuscan wines were high quality red wine made by noble wine making families that did not fit into the DOC region classification. Using French grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, being that these varieties were used they were not allowed to use the classification system and were labeled Vino da Tavola (table wine).  In 1992 the Italian government recognized the the success of Super Tuscan and created a new classification IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) ranking higher than Vino da Tavola. Later Bolgheri a wine region in the Maremma zone that runs along the Tuscan sea coast has established itself as a DOC.
